Our story

One of the most useful things is hearing from someone who's been there.

Kindling is a growing collection of anonymous letters, written for the next person walking in behind you. It's the heart of Ember, and it began with a daughter, a diagnosis, and a pregnancy that overlapped.

When her mom was diagnosed with glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive brain cancers there is, Angeline was 15 weeks pregnant and already raising a toddler. Overnight, she was caring for the woman who raised her while growing a new life of her own.

She just wanted to hear from someone in a similar situation, telling her their experience so she could feel less alone.

"The most useful thing anyone gave us was another person, a little further down the road, telling us the truth."

Angeline, co-founder of Ember

Ember, the company Angeline and her co-founder Jason built, helps with the head: the information, the logistics, the guidance families need in the gaps between appointments. Kindling is the heart. A quiet place to write out how it actually feels, and to leave that for the next person in your shoes.

What it is

Kindling is for serious illness, the kind that turns a life upside down. Whether you're the one who's sick, caring for someone who is, or you loved someone through it, this is for you.

You write out how it actually feels, and leave it for the next person in that spot. Or you come find the one that already sounds like you.

Every letter is anonymous. A person reads each one before it's published, identifying details come out, and you can pull yours back anytime.

Before they asked anyone else, they wrote first

Angeline wrote the first one. "There's no way out, but there is a way through."
